Ghee is clarified butter without salt. Ghee is the secret ingredient that gives Indian cooking its distinctive flavour. An absolute must for Indian cooking.
PLEASE NOTE: We do not sell Vegetable Ghee which is essentially hydrogenated vegetable oil and therefore not very good for you!
Ghee is a clarified butter without any solid milk particles or water. Ghee is used in India and throughout South Asia in daily cooking. A good quality ghee adds aroma, flavour and taste to Indian food.
Ghee can be a great asset for people who are on a low fat diet since even a small quantity of ghee can add a comparatively higher degree of flavour than other oil or fat products. Ensure that when you buy ghee it is made from cows milk and not the "vegetable ghee" made from hydrogenated vegetable oil. The flavour is far superior and butter ghee is healthier although it should be used sparingly.
Ghee is suitable for cooking at high temperatures unlike butter which will burn and does not require refrigeraton if you keep moisture out of it ie dont dip a wet spoon in it.
As well as being an essential ingredient in many Indian dishes, ghee is also delicious smeared on Naan breads and adds a real touch of authentic flavour.
