Ground Nutmeg is simply the convenient pre-ground form of whole nutmegs. Whole nutmegs are the seeds of the tree Myristica Fragrans which produces both Mace and Nutmegs - Mace being the outer casing of the nutmeg (known as the "blade").
Ground Nutmeg is both sweeter and more pungent than mace, however, it is regarded as a mild spice commonly used to flavour egg dishes soups, preserves and some sausages. It is also used to flavour sweet dishes (egg custard), various puddings and fruit pies. It is also excellent with leafy green vegetables such as cabbage and spinach where a little sprinkled while cooking brings out the full flavour of the vegetable.
A native of Grenada and Indonesia nutmeg is popular throughout Europe and in particular the Netherlands and Italy where it is used to flavour cakes, muffins, sweets, fruit pies and eggnog.

Culinary UsesA mild and slightly sweet spice with a slightly peppery note which is used for both savoury and sweet dishes. Nutmeg complements savoury egg dishes, leafy green vegetable dishes, vegetable soups and roast meats. It is commonly used in sweets, puddings, breads, cakes and muffins.
