Chillies (Birdseye) - Whole

Chillies (Birdseye) - Whole

Very hot, small whole chillies that can be used instead of fresh chillies. Great for hot sauces & chilli oil. Chillies are the hot cousins in the Capsicum family. Dried chillies have a unique taste and many uses. Heat whole dried Bird Eye chillies in some oil until they increase in size. The frying enhances their flavour. Bird Eye chillies may be small but they are very hot so use with care!

Chillies are simply capsicums that are hot to taste. There is only a single gene marking the difference between capsicum and chilli fruit. The hotness of chillies is measured in Scoville units the mild bell pepper measuring around 100 -500 scoville units with the blistering hot habaneros measuring around 300,000. Birdseye chillies measure around 30,000 - 50,000 scovilles making them among the hottest.

Medicinal Uses
Helps to dissolve blood clots, opens up sinuses and air passages, breaks up mucus in the lungs, acts as a decongestant or expectorant, helps prevent bronchitis and emphysema and stomach ulcers. Most of chilli pepper's pharmacological activity is credited to capsaicin (from the Latin "to bite") the compound that makes the pepper taste hot. Also a potent painkiler, alleviating headaches when inhaled and joint pain when injected. Hot paprika made from hot chilli peppers is high in natural aspirin. Chilli has antibacterial and antioxidant properties. Putting hot chilli sauce on food speeds up metabolism thereby burning calories. Chilli peppers do not harm the stomach lining or promote ulcers as commonly claimed.
